Baxter State Park
North of Millinocket is Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest
peak, at 5,267 feet. The park, declared "forever wild" by benefactor Percival
Baxter, has 204,733 acres with 47 mountain peaks and ridges, 18 of which
exceed 3,000 feet. The Katahdin climb is considered a "must-do," which can
result in a relatively crowded "wilderness" experience in summer. Those
seeking true wilderness should consider tackling other peaks that offer
as much enjoyment as Katahdin but a better chance of solitude. Baxter has
more than 185 miles of well-marked hiking trails and is the northern terminus
of the Appalachian Trail, which extends to Georgia. The park is a popular
winter camping area from December 1 to March 31 and is a wonderful destination
for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Access is restricted to two gates,
one near Millinocket and a less-used entrance at the northeastern corner
of the park. There are 10 widely scattered campgrounds with a variety of
facilities. Campsite reservations during the summer season are essential
and must be made in early January. An entry fee is charged for out-of-state
residents.
