Ohiopyle State Park
Ohiopyle State Park is the gateway to the Laurel Mountains and encompasses 19,000
acres of rugged wilderness. The focal point of the park is the 14-mile long
Youghiogheny River Gorge, which provides some of the best whitewater rafting
and kayaking in the East. Ohiopyle is an American Indian term meaning white,
frothy water. Ohiopyle Falls is the day-use area, with parking and scenic
overlooks of the falls. The lower river contains boisterous rapids. The
upper section of the river offers canoeable Class I and II rapids. There
are guided river tours on the lower section, with canoe and raft rentals
available for the calmer upper section. Bicyclists and hikers share 28 miles
of rails-to-trails paths along streambeds and past waterfalls. A dedicated
mountain bike trail also is available. The park has a 223-site campground;
reservations are recommended.
